Staying Fixed in 2006!

By Daniel Jordan Gen 12:1 The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” I love the story of Abraham. Here we have a man who was told to leave everything he knew–to leave the comforts of home–to leave everything that was familiar. What he was he given? He was simply given a word from God. Abraham was given a word from God and simply believed it. He stayed fixed on it. God gave him incredible promises. One of those promises was to be a great nation. Finally, when Abraham was old, the Lord told Abraham and Sarah that they would have a child, and they simply believed him. What a great thing to believe God. God’s blessing depends on our response to the word of God. In Abraham ‘s case, he had a choice. He either could have stayed at home, disregarded the promise of God and never entered into the promise, or he could simply believe and obey. Think about it. He didn’t have a map, no guide except for God himself. He had to let go of everything he knew was familiar and embrace something completely foreign, which was God and His Word. You see the promise of God is what the Father wants us to go by. That’s what faith is. That’s why the thing the devil works hardest at is to get us to waver at the point of the word of God . Remember, in the garden of Eden the first thing that Satan did was try to cast doubt on the word of God. “Did God really say that you must not eat from the any tree?” You see if the devil can cause you to doubt, he has you right where he wants you. Yet, God is calling us to stay fixed in 2006. That means to keep the promise of God before us. You may have had promises made to you but you are still between the “amen” and the “there it is”. You feel that there are things that God has promised you, but you are still waiting for the manifestation of the promise. How many of us are in the same boat? Well, let’s take a cue from Abraham. Abraham had a wonderful promise for his life, but remember, the Bible says that the promise took 25 years to fulfill. He was led out of his hometown when he was 75 years old, yet it wasn’t until he was 99 years old that Sarah became pregnant. That was 25 years of believing the Word of God. The Bible says he was fully persuaded that God had the power to do what he had promised. Are you fully persuaded today? You see this is the kind of focus God is wanting us to have for this year. He wants us to be fully persuaded. It’s easy to be persuaded in church. But it is not always easy to be persuaded when you are by yourself. So how do we stay focused this year? Determine to spend every day reading and confessing God’s Word. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. If you will stay focused on God’s Word you will have good success. Remember what God said to Joshua, “Meditate on this book day and night and you will have great success.” Josh 1:8 Abraham had to let go of the familiar in order to receive what God wanted him to have. How about us? Many times God is trying to get us to a certain place but we have difficulty stepping out of our comfort zones. A ship wrecked off the New England coast many years ago. A young member of the coast guard rescue crew said, “We can’t go out. We’ll never get back.” The grizzled old captain replied, “We have to go out. We don’t have to come back.” This captain knew what his mission was. He was willing to step out of his comfort zone. He made up his mind. Will you make a decision right now that you are going to release the comfortable. Release the familiar in order to go where God’s voice is calling you ? God has a vision and a purpose for you. Will you stay focused on His call and promise? Fixed on your purpose Another thing that God would have us to stay fixed on, is our purpose and destiny. Something else happened on Abraham’s journey with God: Gen 18:10 Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?” 13 Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son.” Abraham had stepped out on the Word. It was almost 25 years later. Now God shows us and says that even at their advanced age, that He was going to grant them a child from their own bodies. At this point Abraham was 99 years old. Sarah was also way past child bearing age, but yet here comes the promise again. The temptation came to doubt because the circumstances seemed so impossible. But we have a God of the impossible! We have a God that specializes in the impossible! Don’t let circumstances kill your dream. We see an example of purpose and destiny in the life of the Apostle Paul. He writes. Phil 3:12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. What is the Apostle Paul saying in this passage? He is demonstrating some of this attitude. His attitude was to take hold of something—to take hold of his destiny. There is a story involving Yogi Berra, the well-known catcher for the New York Yankees, and Hank Aaron, who at that time was the chief power hitter for the Milwaukee Braves. The teams were playing in the World Series, and as usual Yogi was keeping up his ceaseless chatter, intended to pep up his teammates on the one hand, and distract the Milwaukee batters on the other. As Aaron came to the plate, Yogi tried to distract him by saying, “Henry, you’re holding the bat wrong. You’re supposed to hold it so you can read the trademark.” Aaron didn’t say anything, but when the next pitch came he hit it into the left-field bleachers. After rounding the bases and tagging up at home plate, Aaron looked at Yogi Berra and said, “I didn’t come up here to read.” Hank Aaron refused to be distracted. He kept focused on his goal. Each one of us has a calling and a destiny and God wants each of us to be faithful to the calling that He has given us. But unlike the fatalists that say that no matter what you do your destiny is fixed, the Bible presents us as having a choice in the matter. The Bible presents us as having a responsibility to take a hold of that destiny. 1 Cor 15:2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. Each one of us has to hold on to the Lord. We have to reach up and take hold of what we believe. Did you know that it was possible to believe in vain? When is it in vain?: When we lose focus and let go of our destinies. But I encourage you today, be like the Apostle Paul and forget what is behind! Be like Abraham who did not waver. Make up your mind. This year you are going to stay fixed on God and his purpose for you. You are going to hold firmly to His promise. You will refuse to be distracted and you will overcome! Why Cord Blood Is So Precious

By Balajee Bashyaam Cord blood is the blood remaining in the umbilical cord of a baby after the babys birth. Recently it has been discovered that the cord blood contains stem cells that are rich in quality and can be a great source of blood cells. This cord blood can be processed, and stored in banking centers and can later be used to replenish the stem cells in case of stem cell transplant. Stem cells generate the blood cells required in a human body. When the stem cells get damaged due to any reason, the blood cell generation levels in a body will get affected. This can result in either excess of blood cells or shortage of blood cells. In order to treat the diseases caused by these conditions, stem cell transplantation need to be performed, i.e. new, healthy stem cells from a matching person have to be transplanted to the patient. The best source of stem cells has been the bone marrow. Recently the cord blood from the umbilical cord of a baby has been found to be rich in stem cell content and is being considered as a good option for those considering stem cell transplant. Cord blood and bone marrow can be used to as a source of stem cells but cord blood has a set of advantages while considering for stem cell transplant as its collection, preservation and transplantation is comparatively easier compared to bone marrow transplant. Further it is highly likely that the availability of the cord blood will become high as more people recognize its use and simplicity with which they can donate the cord blood for stem cell preservation by specialized banks, which can be used later for treatments. Cord blood and stem cell preservation techniques have gone through rapid advancements in recent times. Generally it is the cord blood banks which will practice cord blood and stem cell storage and preservation. These banks will collect the cord blood and will test it for various criteria including stem cell count before placing it in preservation containers. Later the stem cells will be separated and stored in liquid nitrogen in a freezer. When needed this can either be used for the same person or can be donated to others. The details of the tissue type of the cord blood will be analyzed and entered in a registry to be used for transplantation with a matching recipient. The cord blood and stem cell preservation containers are normally cryogenically sealed special containers where the blood can be stored for a long time. It has been found that with proper storage cord blood and stem cells, the preservation time can be up to ten years. Cord blood and stem cell preservation is making a big difference in saving the lives of people, as the number of expectant patients waiting for stem cell transplant operations is far more than the number of matching cord blood units available, it will be a great advancement if the number of stem cells in an unit of cord blood can be increased. Cord blood banking is not a procedure adopted compulsorily anywhere. Parents desirous of having the cord blood preserved for future use have to make necessary arrangements with the authorised cord blood banking services well in advance. Check out benefits of baby’s umbilical cord blood banking website for more latest information on cord blood banking. Visit umbilical cord blood collection procedure for more details on how to collect umbilical cord blood properly and safely through collection kit. What’s Love Got To Do With It? Five Do’s And Don’ts Women Want Their Men To Know

By Constance Weygandt When women get together and talk about the men in their lives, there are reoccurring themes that usually end with someone saying, “Why do they do that ?” “They”, of course, being men in general and their man in particular. For this Valentines Day, I thought I would share five dos and donts that invariably come up in a conversation about men. Do Kiss. This is the number 1 secret that men need to know. Keep It Simple Stupid. It really is the little things, done consistently, that will melt our hearts. Some examples would be: clean out the dishwasher without being asked, make us a cup of coffee or tea in the morning, pick up after us once in awhile. Do not keep a running tally in your brain of what you have done for us. Cooking dinner for us, dressed in a pair of cute boxer shorts, with an expectant look on your face is not exactly subtle, guys. For all the men that have done this, you know who you are. There is nothing that will throw cold water on a hot night faster than having your woman feel she owes you for a simple act of kindness. Do romance us. On Valentines Day, instead of stopping on your way home from work to pick up flowers and a card, go to a florist a few days before. Pick a stem of your girls favorite blossom and have it delivered with a note which reads, “The perfection of this reminded me of you.” We like corny, sentimental mush. Do not have your secretary, sister, mother, or God forbid – your girlfriend, pick out a gift for us. I think this one is self-explanatory. Do laugh with us. Women often state, when asked what qualities they look for in a man, “a sense of humor”. You are probably thinking that we say that but what we really fantasize about is a hunk and you would be right. However, we will forgive almost anything in a man who makes us laugh. Do not take yourself too seriously. Dont only talk about your work, your needs, your likes and dislikes. Give us equal time to share our dreams with you. Do listen. I know this is a hard one for most men. We are aware that after the first five minutes of conversation, when that glazed look comes over you, that we have lost you. However, we want you to pretend to be interested. If we tell you about a tic that dear Aunt Sally has and our concern that it may be hereditary, make a mental note of it and ask us about it a few days later. You get huge points for this one. Do not tell us that Valentines Day is just another excuse for big business to make money and that you dont feel you should contribute to the commercialization of it. I actually had a male friend who shared this opinion with his wife. The only response I could think of was,” Gee. That extra y chromosome doesnt help you much, does it ?” Do buy us jewelry. When all else fails, we like jewelry. It gives us bragging rights. Do not buy us a hammer, toaster or a membership to a gym on Valentines Day. A rule of thumb on this one would be : On Valentines Day, if what you are thinking of buying us has any use at all, dont do it. I hope these little insights into a womans mind are helpful. This Valentines Day try one or two of the dos. Who knows? You may be able to retire those boxer shorts. Constance Weygandt is a speaker, author and balance mentor. How Not to Get Burned by Your Hot New Flame

By Marcia Augustine When the hot new guy in your life seems to enjoy your relationship as much as you do, its easy to assume that he feels the same way you do about your future potential. Receiving flattering attention from a new flame can be a dangerous trap that propels you into having sex too soon, when you should be using that time to discover what his true intentions toward you are. If youve ever made this same mistake, dont be hard on yourself about it, because assumptions about a new suitor happen easily. The guy whos after casual sex is highly motivated to get along with you for at least a few weeks, which may be more than enough time for you to fall head over heels for him. The validation you get from being pursued by a desirable man can tempt you to project an unrealistic image of your future together based on nothing more than first impressions. While you may fantasize about being married to Mr. Wonderful, his only fantasies may be about sex. You wont know if hes excited about you because he thinks hes met his soul mate or because hes sexually infatuated with you, unless the two of you talk about your possible future together. To complicate the situation, he may fuel your dreams by telling you what you want to hear, which will cause your fantasies to escalate. When the truth comes out, it’s a very long fall from those lofty heights back down to the hard ground of reality. How to avoid that crash landing? By remembering the following formula: To Us: Have a lot in common + The sex is good + See each other regularly = Relationship with long term potential To the Men Were Dating: Have a lot in common + The sex is good + See each other regularly = Have a lot in common + The sex is good + See each other regularly Heres an assumption you can make thatll help keep you out of trouble: UNTIL YOUR NEW FLAME HAS HAD TIME TO DEVELOP FEELINGS FOR YOU, SEXFOR HIM IS JUST SEX, AND DOESNT CARRY ANY DEEPER MEANING OR PROMISE. Making an assumption means youve come to a conclusion without having thought it through. Dont let that happen here. Dont let your emotions override your good judgment simply because youre infatuated with Mr. Wonderful. Because if you choose to have sex with him instead of choosing to protect your emotions by waiting, you choose to value him more than you value yourself. Once again, understand that if you want Mr. Right to love, honor and cherish you, then honor yourself by protecting your emotions, and by loving and cherishing yourself enough to believe youre worth getting to know. Rushing into sex risks too much too soon. If you give yourself to your guy before discovering his true feelings for you, communicating your needs can easily morph into making needy demands. Dont give your most intimate self to a man who just wants a casual relationship. Because if his sexual needs are being met, hell see no reason to meet your emotional needs thereafter. Having sex and assuming that the two of you therefore share an emotional bond can be a mistake. The truth may be that you feel bonded to him, but he may or may not feel bonded to you. Look beyond the immediate reward of being the recipient of his attention. Physical attraction to and infatuation with a man are poor reasons to have sex, if what you really want is to be courted by a marriage-minded Mr. Right. If you can postpone having sex with him, youll discover if hes interested in a commitment with you, and if he isnt, you can leave before your feelings for him deepen. Fishing for Freshwater Fish

By Richard Chapo As you well know, fishing is all about knowing your fishing grounds. Well, you also need to know the fish. Here is a brief summary of common freshwater fish you could go after. Fishing for Freshwater Fish When discussing common freshwater fish that you might try to catch, one always runs the risk of having a different definition of common than others. Since I am writing the article, you will just have to learn to live with this list. The bass is undoubtedly the most common freshwater fish targeted by anglers. There are plenty of variations, but basses tend to break down into two categories largemouth and smallmouth. Both fish are considered excellent game fish, but the smallmouth is known for putting up a torrid fight. The bass were originally found in the Southeast of the country, but are now found practically anywhere. They will eat just about anything they can find, but temperatures should be between 65 and 75 degrees for the best results. If the bass is number one on our list, trout definitely take up the second position. Frankly, many people would argue the trout should be first. There are a wide variety of trout with brown, rainbow, brook and cutthroats being a few of the more popular. There are some trout that stick solely to lakes and rivers while other varieties head down stream to the ocean and forge for food there. Steelhead trout, for instance, are brown trout that do this. The conditions for catching trout vary widely on the location and type of trout. The glorious salmon is our third fish on the list. That being said, the exact nature of a salmon is a bit complex. There are two types Pacific and Atlantic. The Atlantic Salmon is undisputedly awell, salmon. The Pacific Salmon, however, is not. Scientifically, it is considered a variation of a rainbow trout with an urge to travel. Genetically, they salmons are entirely different. Ironically, the best place to catch salmon these days is not along the east or west coast of the country. It is the Great Lakes. Pacific Salmon were introduced to these waters to act as a predator against a herring species that was proving bothersome. The salmon controlled the herring so well that the salmon population exploded much to the delight of anglers everywhere. Well, there you have it. The three most common fish. Any of them will give you a good fight and are great targets. Rick Chapo is with Nomad Journals – makers of journals that make great fly fishing gifts. Making Homemade Soaps – What Needs To Be Learned First

By Lisa Chambers Soapmaking can be a creative and rewarding hobby as long as the proper safety precautions are followed. One of the biggest aspects of this means learning about lye and other safety procedures, and this should be done before even bothering to attempt to research how the soapmaking process works. Sometimes even experienced soapmakers need to be reminded! Don’t let this all scare you- making soap can be as safe of a craft as any other! However, the key to safety means being informed. Here’s some guidelines and tips: GET TO KNOW LYE AND RESPECT IT!!! Soap CANNOT be made without lye. There’s no way around it and if someone told you they did, I hate to break it to you- they lied. Even liquid soap, bath gels, and shampoos contain a form of lye called potassium hydroxide. However lye, alone, is a highly dangerous substance. There’s no sugar coating it- lye can kill you. If you respect it and use it properly everything will be fine. Try not develop a fear of it, and instead focus on handling it properly. Label your lye water. If lye is ingested internally, there is a strong likelihood of it being fatal. If you walked away for even for less than a minute and someone walked into your kitchen with a bowl of lye water in a glass, bowl, or pitcher- the results could be deadly! Just to be safe I like to mark my bowl or pitcher with large adhesive label or even better yet, a permanent marker. Wear your goggles or safety glasses. Always! If lye water splashes into your eyes, it can blind you. It doesn’t take much… Better to be safe than sorry! Wear your gloves…. And your clothes! If it can do that to your eyes, exposed skin isn’t safer either! Lye can eat through skin. Even in tiny amounts it can cause painfully irritating chemical burns. It’s wise to keep a bottle of vinegar around in case of splashes or spills. If this should occur, rinsing with vinegar helps to neutralize the lye. However, care should be taken to prevent this because the vinegar cannot undo damage that has already been done! Even finished soap bars can be irritating until soap has it’s “curing” time- usually a very minimum of four weeks. When making soap, it’s smart to make sure you’re wearing clothes that will protect your skin. Pants, instead of shorts or dresses, and long sleeves are ideal. Don’t forget your feet- remember your shoes! Keep pets and children away while soapmaking. It doesn’t take much for lye to be harmful to anyone- it takes even less to bring harm to a small child or pet. If you have little ones running around, it’s best to do your soapmaking in an area they don’t have access to or wait until you have “alone time”. Even with ground rules and with the best behaved children or pets in the world, it’s just not worth the risk. Only use pure lye. NEVER attempt to use Draino or any other products that “contain” lye. These products contain other chemical additives that may interfere with the soapmaking process. The results could range from winding up with a soap that is highly irritant to the skin to a lethal concoction that you wouldn’t even want to be in the same room with! Work in a well ventilated area. The fumes that rise when lye is mixed with water during the first few minutes can irritate the lungs. Some people are more sensitive to it than others, but a well ventilated area is recommended to anyone. Remember even if it doesn’t bother you at the moment, repeated exposure may bring about a different story. Larger batches of soap are usually give off more potent fumes than smaller ones. Use an accurate scale. Never measure your ingredients by volume because it can lead to inaccuracies, leaving you with an irritating “lye heavy” soap. Instead, make sure you use an accurate scale to weigh out your ingredients- one that measures in increments of at least a 10th of an ounce is best. A good postal scale will do just fine. It’s also a good idea to invest in calibration weights for your scale so that you can test it’s accuracy periodically. Use the right equipment. Choose your bowls, pitchers, spoons, or whatever will come in contact with your raw soap carefully. Ideally, you want to make sure your supplies aren’t going to be used again for cooking, for an example. You also have to keep in mind that certain metals such as aluminum or copper can have undesired chemical reactions with lye. The best materials to use are stainless steel and heavy duty dishwasher safe plastics. (Even wooden spoons will do, though the lye water will slowly eat at them over time. I lost a good spoon that way!) Some people even recommend using large glass Pyrex measuring cups. However, I personally can’t. I have heard of rare instances where even sturdy Pyrex glass has shattered- in one case I heard of, no one was even in the same room when it happened! In a way it makes sense. Lye water, when first mixed, can reach very high temperatures in an absurdly small amount of time. Then on top of it, over time the potent lye itself may do it’s damage. Over time it may make the glass brittle and create stress on it, though unseen to the human eye. Use distilled water instead of tap. Some people say it’s alright to use regular tap water for soapmaking. In most cases, it probably is fine… However tap water can contain various trace metals and minerals that may interact with your lye, giving some unexpected results in your finished soaps. Once again, much better to be safer than sorry! Mind your pour! Always make sure to close the container of lye tightly when you’re done. Any moisture that gets in contact with the lye granules will form clumps, which may increase the chance of spills while pouring next time you use it. It may even effect your soap by giving you inaccurate weighings of your ingredients in the end, if enough gets in there. Pouring slowly so you get it right the first shot and don’t have to put any back is also wise. Another thing that can be a hassle sometimes when pouring to weigh your lye is static… Lye sometimes gets a “charge” and granules here and there seem to have a mind of their own when being poured! A quick wiping of the container you’ll be weighing with a dryer sheet first helps with a smoother pour. Always use a lye calculator- no matter what. Never assume a recipe that someone gives you, that you find online, or come across in a book is safe. Even if you obtain a recipe from the world’s most trustworthy source, it is always safer to run your recipe through a lye calculator first to make sure you use the proper amount of your ingredients. There are many free and easy to use lye calculators that can be used online or downloaded to your computer, so there’s no excuses! Stay away from painted surfaces. It’s best not to do your soapmaking on any painted surfaces. Lye can easily strip paint and damage surfaces. Even on kitchen counters made with a tougher surface material, it’s a good idea to lay down some plastic or freezer paper to protect the area you’re working in. Remember to always keep that vinegar handy as well, just in case! I know this all must sound terrifying to some and makes you feel as if you need a Hazmat team on standby when learning how to make soap, but believe me it’s not really as bad as it sounds! More people than you’d probably imagine throughout the world make soap every day. If you’re interested in soapcrafting, just do as much research on the subject as possible from as many different sources as you can. There are also several wonderful forums for soapmakers where people can turn to others for advice and to share experiences and ideas. Soapmaking may not be for everyone, but chances are once you make your first successful batch , you’ll be hooked on this craft! Just remember- at any stage in this wonderful hobby, safety always comes first! Organic or Chemical – or Both? What Kind of Vegetable Garden Should You Grow

By Jim Kennard Today we will discuss a fundamental question in gardening. Previously I was posed this question: I hear that chemicals are poisoning our waterways, and that organic growing is much healthier than using chemicals. Whats the truth, and how do I grow a healthy, productive, and sustainable garden without hurting the environment? This important question deserves an accurate answer. Therefore lets learn about plant nutrition. First, plants receive nutrition only as water-soluble mineral compounds through their roots. When we put plants, compost or manure into the soil, the organic material must first decompose, and the nutrient compounds must revert to water-soluble minerals before the next generation of plants can use them. This takes time, and sometimes as much as half of the nutrients are lost in the decomposition process. Nitrogen is particularly susceptible to loss because it is volatile and returns to the air very easily. Second, there is no real difference between organic, and mineral or chemical nutrients. Everything in this world is a chemical! To the chemist the elements in the soil are called chemicals, to a geologist they are called minerals, and to an organic enthusiast they are called organics, but they are the same substances. To quote J. I. Rodale, from Organic Gardening magazine, “we organic gardeners have let our enthusiasm run away with us. We have said that the nitrogen which is in organic matter is different (and thus somehow better) from nitrogen in a commercial fertilizer. But this is not so.” And “actually there is no difference between the nitrogen in a chemical fertilizer and the nitrogen in a leaf.” Third, there is no difference between soil and rocks except for the size of the particles, and 12 of the 13 mineral nutrients plants require are essentially ground-up rocks! They are natural, and theres really nothing “synthetic” about them. So you see, there is no difference between “organic nitrogen” and mineral or chemical nitrogen, except two primary things. 1) the nitrogen that is part of an organic substance must decompose and revert to the water-soluble mineral state before being available to plants, and 2) mineral-source nitrogen is much higher in nutritional content, so much less is required to feed your plants. As further evidence that mineral nutrients are not bad per se, Ive researched which fertilizers meet the requirements for qualification as a Certified Organic garden, and 12 of the 13 nutrients we use in a Mittleider garden are approved. And the 13th – nitrogen – is the one thats most often used by organic gardeners, both in the garden and to aid in composting! Go figure. This being the case, what should you do to assure you have the best garden and the healthiest plants possible? Give your plants accurate dosages of the best combination of nutrition you possibly can. The Mittleider natural mineral nutrient formulas are available at www.foodforeveryone.org/learn. You can mix your own from scratch, or get the micro-nutrients from the Foundation website in the Store section. And never over-use any kind of fertilizer. Both manure and mineral compounds will harm our water supply if allowed to leach into the water table. Meanwhile, remember that 99% of us depend on 1% to feed us, and commercial growers feed their crops! They use formulas like ours and call them “The preferred horticultural mix.” Just check out Scotts Peters Professional Pete Lite as an example. This is not to say that organic materials dont have a place in the garden. You can improve soil texture and tilth by adding materials that have desirable characteristics, and even add some nutrient value. However, improving the soil in that way is not necessary to having a good garden, and people often introduce weeds, rodents, bugs, and diseases into their gardens, or provide a haven for them with their organic mulching practices. It is for this reason that we do not emphasize or encourage composting and manure. Mittleider gardens qualify as “organic” because we don’t use pesticides or herbicides. However, I suggest they are even better than organic, because the plants receive just what they need, they grow fast, and we almost never have insect or disease problems because there are no weeds to provide a home, and the plants aren’t in the ground long enough for the pests to get established. How To Resign Gracefully

By William Werksman Once a new job has been accepted, you need to consider the timing of your resignation. Since two weeks notice is considered the norm, make sure your resignation properly coincides with your start date at the new company. Try to avoid an extended start date. Even if your new job begins in 10 weeks, dont give 10 weeks notice; wait eight weeks and then give two weeks notice. This way, youll protect yourself from disaster; in the unlikely event your new company announces a hiring freeze a month before you come on board. By staying at your old job for only two weeks after youve announced your resignation, you wont be subjected to the envy, scorn, or feelings of professional impotence that may result from your new role as a lame-duck employee. Some companies will make your exit plans for you. I know a candidate whose employer had the security guard escort him out of the building the moment he announced his intention to go to work for a direct competitor. Fortunately, he was still given two weeks pay. Your resignation should be handled in person, preferably on a Friday afternoon. Ask your direct supervisor if you can speak with him privately in his office. When you announce your intention to resign, you should also hand your supervisor a letter which states your last date of employment with the company. Let him know that youve enjoyed working with him, but that an opportunity came along that you couldnt pass up, and that your decision to leave was made carefully, and doesnt reflect any negative feelings you have toward the company or the staff. You should also add that your decision is final, and that you would prefer not to be made a counteroffer, since you wouldnt want your refusal to accept more money to appear as a personal affront. Let your supervisor know that you appreciate all the companys done for you; and that youll do everything in your power to make your departure as smooth and painless as possible. Bridal Shower Games for the Guests

By Gail Leino Some guests like a party that involves them in an activity such as the more popular bridal shower games that are becoming almost a necessity for the average shower. These active and more involved games arent like trivia games or the newly wedded game thats adopted from the television show. Everyone usually has an equal chance to win something or just have a little fun. The first game idea is the Bridal Drawing game. Its more of a fun activity than a game because there isnt really a winner; its just something to laugh over. Give each of the guests a piece of paper, a pencil, and a book or brown paper bag. There are a couple of variations of the game. In some the guests have to put the paper flat on the cover of the book and place the book on the tops of their heads, with the paper side up. Then they have to draw a picture on the tops of their heads; of what the bride will look like on her wedding day. In another version the guests just put paper bags over their heads and draw the picture on any hard surface in front of them. The point is to keep them from being able to see what they are drawing. Usually the game results in a few good pictures to laugh over and you can save them to give to the bride in a memory book. Another good game idea is the Grab Bag game. Usually only women can participate in this one. Before the bridal shower make up a list of items typically found in a purse. These are fairly obvious, hairbrush, keys, wallets, tampons, loose change, old mints, etc. You can even add a few unusual items like a pair of tights, condoms, or nail polish remover. This is a fun game and youll find that you can really learn a lot about a person by what they keep in their purses. A quick game is the Rice Bowl game. Place a bag of rice in a large bowl with safety pins or (safer for the guests) birdseed like sunflower seeds. Guest will all go through the bowl at once for about two minutes looking for seeds or pins. Whoever has the most at the end of the time is the winner.
